Originally released in 2001 after Doom, Marathon has an identical feeling with a 2D game engine, but a much different engine for a first person shooter game. Game play is almost identical, but Marathon takes a slower, more deliberate approach, and it is one of the earliest games to utilize the 'freeze screen' option, meaning that more realistic shooting is not achieved rather than a better interactive experience and guided shooting. As such, if you like this type of game you will probably enjoy the later versions as well, but be warned that a lack of new content can mar the experience.
There are actually two versions of this game, the original one and the remake. The main differences between the two are the backgrounds, the game play and the graphics. Although the game has similar levels to the original, the level layouts are different, there are no more weapons, some level changes, and some enemies are replaced with a new set of monsters. The music and sound effects are pretty much the same, though. There are no new achievements or bonuses, but they do exist in the original version. However, this version is actually a lot better than the remake, even though it has the same overall style of gameplay.
